Resolution On Marriage Age For Women Contradicts National and International Law - Nigerian Feminists

The Nigerian Feminist Forum (NFF) criticized a resolution of the Nigeria Senate to amend section 29(a) of the constitution that stipulates that a woman shall not be qualified for marriage until she is 18 years old. NFF argued that the decision to abolish age limitation for marriage contradicts a bunch of national and international laws, and urged the National Assembly to alter the resolution. This information is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday at the NFF website.
photo
In their statement, NFF pointed out that the discussed amendment "will remove the age specification of women who can marry and would further deem a woman to be of “full age” once she is married, irrespective of the age she did so."
According to NFF, this decision will be a "clear violation" of Article 21(2) of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child that prohibits child marriage and betrothal, and of Article 6(b) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa that stipulates that the minimum age of marriage for women is 18 years.
Furthermore, it will run counter to Section 21 of the Child’s Rights Act of Nigeria that prohibits the marriage of persons below 18 years and imposes a punishment of N500,000 or a 5 year jail term, or both; Article 18 (3) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights; the Conventions on the Rights of the Child and Article 27 of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
The feminists called the National assembly to reconsider their decision. They also urged the African Commission to encourage the Government of Nigeria to fulfill their obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and under the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

List Of Senators Who Voted In Favour To Legalize Underage Marriage In Nigeria

We now know how senators voted on the constitution amendment bill which caused an uproar in the senate on Tuesday.
The part up for ammendment relates to persons qualifies to renounce Nigerian citizenship. The constitution in Section 29 says anyone of age can do so.
Section 29(4) (b) says that ” any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age.” It means that even a child if married can be seen to be of full age and as such can renounce citizenship. The committee proposed that that provision be deleted.
When it was put to vote, 2/3 of members present voted for it which meant it was deleted. 2
Senator Yerima had kicked and mobilised his fellow Muslims in the Senate which was threatening to cause confusion. Despite the senate president, David Mark insisting that it could no longer be revisited as it had been voted upon, Yerima continued his objection.
Due to the sensitive nature, Mark had to call for another vote. At this point the Senators who were in favour of this clause could no longer muster 2/3 of the votes that will retain Section 29, Clause 4 (b). Senators still voted 60 votes to 35 votes for the clause to be deleted, but it did not satisfy the 2/3 requirement and so, according to the senate version, “any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age.”
Thanks to Sen. Babafemi Ojudu (Ekiti Central, ACN), we have the full list of the senators who voted NO)
The senators who voted NO, that is those who did not want the clause deleted, include the following:
1. Sen. Abdulmumin M. Hassan (Jigawa South West, PDP)

After the second voting, Yerima tried to get up to thank the Senate Present and his colleagues in an attempt to claim victory, he was shouted down and booed.
Here is the photos of the list:

Nigeria Senate Approves Marriage for Underage Children

The Senate of Federal republic of Nigeria has approved the marriage of under-aged children irrespective of their age in the country.

This new law will proscribe the 18 year-old rule for any Nigerian child to qualify to engaged into a conscious agreement of marriage.

The Senates claimed that a woman is deemed to be full of age once she is married irrespective of her age.The Proponents or supporters of the under-age marriage rule includes Senator Yerima Ahmad Sani, Zamfara West, who claimed that the provision which stipulates a certain age for women before getting married, was at variance with Islamic law.

The resolution was made by lawmakers on Tuesday after a vote on recommendations of the Senate Committee on the Review of the Nigerian Constitution.

The Executive Director of PROJECT ALERT on Violence Against Women, Josephine Effa-Chukwuma, described the resolution as a selfish one.

She said that (the resolution) would contradict the Child Rights Act which stipulated that “a child is anyone below the age of 18″.

“That is very reckless of them and insensitive of them to the plight of young girls, especially in this time and era of child sexual abuse; the implications and complications that come up from early marriage which we all know; VVF, RVF and all that.

“So, if they go to the constitution to remove the age restriction that says one cannot marry a teen, then, they might as well throw the Childs rights acts out of the window.

“The Childs Rights Acts says clearly that a child is any one below the age of 18; or are they oblivious to it , it is completely
unacceptable,” she said.

How to recover your Windows Administrator password

Most operating systems have restricted user accounts for everyday use and one administrator account that has full functionality, which is only used for system maintenance and software installation.
This makes for a more secure system, because malware on a restricted account can't cause nearly as much trouble.
Windows is usually run in admin mode, but if you're a security conscious person and you usually run a restricted account, there's a chance you could forget your admin password because it's so rarely used.
Ophcrack can help in this situation. All Windows passwords are encrypted for security purposes, so getting into an account where you've forgotten the password is nigh-on impossible without outside help. In order to recover your password, Ophcrack cracks your Windows passwords using a huge table of data (over 600MB).
However, it's OS specific, so if you want to recover Vista passwords, you'll need to download the table for that version of Windows.
A password saviour
Ophcrack comes in two handy flavours: a Windows version and a Live Disc variant that runs in the place of Windows. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
The Windows version enables you to store as many tables as you want and use them to recover passwords from almost any version of the OS.
The Ophcrack Live Disc is useful if you're completely locked out of your machine because it enables you to boot straight into the application and find that forgotten password without needing access to Windows itself. Burn just one disc and you'll always be able to get into Windows
  1. Get the password data:Ophcrack needs the encrypted password – its hash data – to decode it into the actual passphrase, so click Load > Local SAM.
    Step 1
  2. Activate the table:Now you need to select a rainbow table. Click Install and navigate to the right one. Ensure the table you need is activated with the green button.
    Step 2
  3. Crack the password:Click Crack to start the process, but be prepared to wait a bit. Eventually, the lost password should be displayed in the NT Pwd column.
    Step 3

10 easy ways to boost your online security

Many people think that installing anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware software should inoculate them from all manner of threats.
And if you're called upon to clean the junk off a friend or relative's PC, you might want to share this link with them to save you getting called back out again in a week.
  1. Augment your anti-virus tool
Threatfire is designed to work alongside existing security products. Unlike traditional anti-virus tools, it doesn't rely on signatures to identify malware; instead, it monitors your PC for suspicious malware-like behaviour. The only time you'll hear from the program is when it's found something suspicious; otherwise it'll sit silently in the background.
  2. Switch to plain text mail
HTML can be used to hide all sorts of unpleasant things in email. Set your mail program to view all messages as plain text by default - you should see an option for viewing individual messages as HTML when you trust the sender.
  3. Don't click mail links
Never visit web sites by clicking links in your email unless you're 100 per cent sure the link is safe. This is especially true for emails purporting to come from financial institutions asking you to log in to verify your account details - 99.9% are scams (the other 0.1% are irresponsible).
  4. Vet your email
Most anti-spam tools only process email that's been downloaded from your mail server - install PopTray and you can check and preview your mail while it's still on the server, deleting unwanted and suspicious messages without exposing them to your mail program.
  5. Switch web browser
Upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer or switch to a browser that doesn't support potentially malicious Active-X controls such as Firefox, Opera or Google Chrome. Check the browser's privacy and security settings are set to Medium High or greater.
  6. Check web sites before you visit
Install the free Web of Trust plug-in for Internet Explorer or Firefox (Chrome will be supported once the browser supports third-party add-ons), and you'll be in a better position to avoid unsafe web sites thanks to its traffic-light system for both sites and search engine results.
  7. Manage your passwords
A password manager such as KeePass enables you to securely and easily enter your passwords into any program. As you only need to remember one master password to use the program, there's no excuse to use the same password across all your online accounts (the program will even generate secure, random passwords for you).
  8. Screen all downloads
Never open attachments or downloads directly - save the file to your hard drive, right-click it and run a quick scan with your security tool of choice prior to opening it. When downloading files, make sure you download from a reputable web site (typically the program's own home page or a respected download site) – the WOT plug-in will help here.
  9. P2P basics
Peer-to-peer networks are a breeding ground for malicious software, particularly in content that's been copyrighted. If you can't live without P2P, pick a trusted provider and client (such as uTorrent). Be careful what you share, and scan all downloads prior to opening them.
  10. Create a virtual sandbox
Sandboxie enables you to run any program in a protected and isolated space on your hard drive. Changes made are discarded when you close the sandbox, so you can surf the web and open mail attachments without fear of malware sneaking on to your PC.
